Tunnel Beach

·         The beach has massive sandstone boulders, mysterious graffiti carved into the cliffs and a dangerous rip that sadly drowned Cargill's youngest daughter.

·         Beyond the beauty of the rugged sandstone cliffs, its claim to fame is the tunnel down to the beach that a local politician, John Cargill, a son of Captain William Cargill, had made for his family in the 1870s.

·         The track was opened in 1983.

·         It is rumoured he gave it to his daughter's as a birthday present.

·         Tunnel Beach has been called the most romantic spot in Dunedin.
